Benefits of losing weight

There are estimated to be over 300 million obese adults worldwide in the year 2000, according to figures issued by the World Health Organisation. It is now considered one of the most serious threats to worldwide health. Men tend to fall into the overweight Body Mass Index category, whilst there are more women classed as obese with a BMI of 30 or higher.

Being overweight or suffering from obesity obese can lead to many serious and even fatal diseases, and increases the risk of premature death. Here are some of the common, well-documented possibly fatal diseases that are caused by being obese:

Cardiovascular disease

The incidence of heart attacks, sudden cardiac death, angina and abnormal heart rhythm are significantly higher in obese people. High blood pressure and associated problems are twice as common in obese patients as in normal weight people. These facts are alarming, but a modest reduction of 5 – 15% of body weight can lower your chances of developing any of these problems.

Cancer

Studies show that obese people are more at risk of developing certain forms of cancer, such as colon, kidney, prostrate, pancreatic, and endometrial and gallbladder cancer. Whilst it is not conclusive exactly how the link works, as it is different for the varying types of cancer, there is enough proof now from studies in the US to make this claim quite strongly. The US National Cancer Institute estimates that in case of newly-diagnosed cancers, 3.2% are due to the patient being obese.

Diabetes

There is an undisputed link between obesity and type II diabetes. Diabetes occurs in obese people at more than three times the UK national rate, and around 80% of people with diabetes are also clinically obese.

Psychological effects

Being overweight or obese can also be a severe psychological and emotional stress factor for many, which can lead to the person suffering from poor social skills and social isolation, lack of positive self-image, depression, eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa, alcoholism, discrimination at work and in social environments, lack of libido and any zest or enjoyment of life. Whilst the studies involving these results of obesity are not as conclusive as the medical statistics for the major physical illnesses, there is still an impressive amount of data that substantiates these factors.

Studies have shown even moderate weight loss of between 5 – 15% of body weight lessens quite dramatically a person’s risk of developing one of these major illnesses.
