Reductil makers, Abbott Laboratories

Reductil was developed and trialled in the 1990s by the well-respected German pharmaceutical company Knoll, which in turn was owned by BASF. In 2001, BASF was acquired by Abbott Laboratories, an international company with an innovative approach to patient care, product development and a long history of helping people with their new medicines.

Abbott’s story goes back more than a century to 1888, when Dr. Abbott first produced some effective plant-based medicines that he used safely and successfully on his patients. The demand for them soon out grew the speed with which he himself could make them, so he had to expand. He built on this success, and in 1900, ‘The Abbott Alkaloid Company’, was incorporated, and Dr Abbott was also the editor and publisher of an industry magazine, a sideline which grew into a sizeable publishing operation.

Around the turn of the century, the Abbott Alkaloid Company concentrated more on the new era of synthetic medicines rather than alkaloids (derived from plants). During the First World War, the company developed new antiseptic agents which were used extensively on the front line to help clean the soldier’s wounds, to great effect. The Company changed its name in 1915 to reflect the new direction of research to Abbott Laboratories.

As the century progressed, Abbott Laboratories successfully developed and marketed anaesthetics, sedatives, water-purification tablets used during World War II, antibiotics, high-potency vitamins and drugs to treat epilepsy. Abbott Laboratories was also a forward thinking employer, and in the mid 1950s introduced a radical programme of employee benefits which extended to the employee’s families. It was a great time of innovation for the company; in 1949 they released 74 new products in one year alone and were internationally recognised as one of the leading pharmaceutical and progressive health-based companies in the world.

During the latter part of the century, Abbott concentrated on providing modern health-care solutions, and acquired new companies to help them expand in specialist areas. Knoll, the company who first developed Reductil, was brought in to complement Abbott’s ongoing commitment in this specialist dietetic industry.

As a doctor, Dr. Abbott was primarily motivated by the desire to help people’s health and he was a pioneer in the improvement of the scientific development and trialling of new medicines. Dr Abbott is now described as one of the founding fathers of the modern pharmaceutical industry.
